Home care at the top of the valleys
Brynmawr is one of the highest towns in Wales, high on the Heads of the Valleys road where Blaenau Gwent meets the Brecon Beacons, with a market hall cinema that has been showing films since the nineteenth century. Families searching for home care in Brynmawr are supporting parents in the town centre and the terraced streets around it, and in Nantyglo, Blaina, Beaufort, Llanelly Hill, Clydach and Gilwern. Winters are hard up here, with snow and ice on the steep roads. A carer who lives in is already there when the weather closes in.
We also arrange care in Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Abergavenny, Merthyr Tydfil and Pontypool.

Nevill Hall, the Grange and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan
Serious emergencies from Brynmawr go to the Grange University Hospital near Cwmbran, run by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, while Nevill Hall in Abergavenny and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan in Ebbw Vale provide minor injuries care, clinics and rehabilitation. A live-in carer in Brynmawr arranged before discharge means your relative comes home to someone ready.
Blaenau Gwent Council and the Welsh rules
Adult social care in Brynmawr is provided by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. In Wales, the council assesses what matters to your relative, and what it can charge each week for care at home is capped. Services are regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales. Villages just east, such as Gilwern and Clydach, are in Monmouthshire, which has its own council. We can often match Welsh-speaking carers.
The market hall, Clydach Gorge and the round towers
A film at the market hall cinema, the ironworks and woods of Clydach Gorge, the round towers at Nantyglo, Keepers Pond and the views from the Blorenge are favourite outings. Many older people here worked in the pits, the Ebbw Vale steelworks or the factories that followed. A carer can keep up chapel, the club and family visits. You choose your carer from matched profiles before anything is agreed.

Funding & regulation
Paying for care in Wales
Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.
Read our full funding guide →Who regulates care here
Home care in Wales is regulated by the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.
Where funding comes from
Apply through your local authority's social services department. Funding is means-tested by the local authority, with the Welsh Government setting a capital limit above which people fund their own care. What a council can charge for the care at home it arranges is capped at £100 a week (2026/27); privately arranged live-in care is paid separately.
How we fit in
Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.

Often, yes. The council's adult social care team for Blaenau Gwent can carry out a free needs assessment and, depending on savings, may contribute to the cost. Where needs are mainly health-related, NHS Continuing Healthcare can pay in full. Attendance Allowance, paid to people over State Pension age who need help with personal care, is not means-tested and can be put towards care.
