Home care in the valley town
Merthyr Tydfil was once the iron capital of the world, and its terraced streets climb the sides of the upper Taff valley towards the Brecon Beacons. Families searching for home care in Merthyr Tydfil are supporting parents in the town centre, Georgetown and Heolgerrig, in Dowlais and Penydarren on the hillside, in the Gurnos and Galon Uchaf, in Cefn Coed to the north, and down the valley in Pentrebach, Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Vale and Treharris. Steep streets and steps to the front door are part of daily life here. A carer who lives in helps your relative manage them safely.
We also arrange care in Aberdare, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar and Brecon.

Prince Charles Hospital
Emergency and inpatient care is at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr, run by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, with some specialist services at the Royal Glamorgan in Llantrisant or in Cardiff. A live-in carer in Merthyr Tydfil arranged before discharge means your relative can come home as soon as they are medically fit.
Merthyr Tydfil Council and Welsh charging rules
Adult social care is provided by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, which carries out free needs assessments and carer's assessments. In Wales there is a weekly limit on what councils can charge for care and support at home, worth checking once your relative is assessed. Care services are regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales, and NHS Continuing Healthcare is assessed separately where needs are mainly health-related.
Cyfarthfa, the Taff Trail and chapel
Cyfarthfa Castle and park, once the ironmaster's home, the Taff Trail and the reservoirs towards the Beacons give lovely outings. Many older people here come from families who worked the ironworks and the pits, and chapel and choir still matter. A carer can help your relative keep getting out, to chapel, the club or family nearby. If your relative prefers Welsh, tell us when we match. You choose your carer from matched profiles before anything is agreed.

Funding & regulation
Paying for care in Wales
Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.
Read our full funding guide →Who regulates care here
Home care in Wales is regulated by the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.
Where funding comes from
Apply through your local authority's social services department. Funding is means-tested by the local authority, with the Welsh Government setting a capital limit above which people fund their own care. What a council can charge for the care at home it arranges is capped at £100 a week (2026/27); privately arranged live-in care is paid separately.
How we fit in
Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.
