Live-in carers from the Peak District to the Lincolnshire coast

The East Midlands combines three cities, Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, with Northampton, Lincoln and a great many market towns, and some of England's most rural countryside in Lincolnshire, Rutland and the Derbyshire Dales. Families searching for live-in care in the East Midlands are supporting parents in Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Lincoln and Northampton, in towns such as Chesterfield, Mansfield and Loughborough, and in villages where visiting care is patchy at best. A live-in carer lives in the home, so the support does not depend on anyone travelling in.

Our county pages cover Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.

City councils and county councils

The region's three big cities each have their own unitary council, so Nottingham City, Leicester City and Derby City Councils run adult social care within their boundaries, while Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire County Councils cover the surrounding areas. Lincolnshire County Council covers most of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire has been split between North and West Northamptonshire Councils since 2021, and Rutland has its own council. The boundary matters: a parent in West Bridgford or Oadby is under the county, not the city. Each council offers a free needs assessment.

Hospitals across the East Midlands

The main hospitals include the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital in Nottingham, King's Mill near Mansfield, the Royal Derby, Chesterfield Royal, the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield and Leicester General, Lincoln County, Pilgrim in Boston, Northampton General and Kettering General. For families on the Lincolnshire coast or in the Peak District, the journey home after a stay can be long. A live-in carer arranged ahead of discharge means your relative has support from the first night.

Rural Lincolnshire and the Peak District

Lincolnshire is one of England's largest and most sparsely populated counties, and the coastal towns from Skegness to Mablethorpe have a large retired population. The Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District bring hills, isolated farms and hard winters. In both, visiting agencies struggle to reach everyone reliably. Live-in care removes the travel from the equation, and a carer who drives can keep your relative connected to the shops, appointments and friends.

In the cities, the challenge is different: busy families, long working days and a parent living alone. Leicester in particular has large Gujarati, Punjabi and other communities, so tell us about language, faith and food when we match.

Night-time support and 24-hour care

Many East Midlands families first call us because nights have become the problem: a parent getting up and becoming confused, a fall on the way to the bathroom, or a husband or wife who has not slept properly for months. A live-in carer is in the house overnight and can help if your relative wakes a few times, though they need a proper night's rest themselves. Where someone needs support awake through the night, two carers working in turn is the safer arrangement. Read more about overnight care and 24/7 care at home.

Live-in care costs in the East Midlands

Live-in care starts from £1,200 a week for one person, specialist care for complex needs such as advanced dementia from £1,300, and two carers for round-the-clock waking support from £2,600. The price is the same in Nottingham as on the Lincolnshire Wolds, and one carer can support a couple. See our pricing and help with funding.

Funding & regulation

Paying for care in England

Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.

Read our full funding guide →

Who regulates care here

Home care in England is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.

Where funding comes from

Apply through your local authority's adult social care team. Means-tested local authority funding and NHS Continuing Healthcare are both available depending on assessed need.

How we fit in

Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.

Common questions

Live-in care in the East Midlands

Local answers on timing, regulation and funding.

Not seeing your question?

Our care managers answer these every day. A no-obligation call takes about ten minutes.

Do you provide live-in care in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby?

Yes. We arrange live-in carers in all three cities and their suburbs, and throughout Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. Most placements begin within a week of the first call.

Is it the city or county council that pays for care?

It depends on the exact address. Nottingham, Leicester and Derby City Councils cover addresses inside the city boundaries; suburbs such as West Bridgford, Oadby, Wigston and Mickleover may fall under the county council instead. A council tax bill will show which one applies.

Do you cover rural Lincolnshire and the Peak District?

Yes. Because the carer lives in the home, rural and coastal addresses are covered at the same weekly price as the cities. We can match carers who drive, which matters where buses are infrequent.

How much does live-in care cost in the East Midlands?

From £1,200 a week for standard live-in care, £1,300 for specialist care and £2,600 for two carers providing round-the-clock support. It is one fixed weekly fee for the agreed care plan, and one carer can support a couple.

Can live-in care help after a stay at QMC or the Leicester Royal Infirmary?

Yes. Tell us the ward and expected discharge date. We can often introduce a carer within 24 to 48 hours in urgent cases, which helps the hospital plan a safe discharge, and the carer can support your relative through the first weeks at home.

Who are your East Midlands carers?

They are experienced, self-employed live-in carers whom we have checked and matched. As an introductory agency, we let you see profiles and speak to candidates before you choose, and we stay involved for support, cover during breaks and replacements if needed.

How many care homes are there in the East Midlands?

Our care-home directory lists 1,491 registered care homes in the East Midlands, each with its own page, and 1,041 of them are rated Good or Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Together they have around 43,300 beds. Live-in care is the alternative for anyone who would rather stay in their own home: one carer moves in, and couples can stay together.
