Live-in Care Throughout Yorkshire

Live-in care across Yorkshire

Yorkshire is England's largest historic county, stretching from the cities of West and South Yorkshire to the Dales, the North York Moors, the coast and the Humber. Families searching for live-in care in Yorkshire are supporting parents in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull and York, in spa and market towns such as Harrogate, Ilkley and Skipton, and in villages where the nearest care agency might be twenty miles away. A carer who lives in the home provides help day and night, whatever the distance.

See our pages for West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.

Who runs social care in Yorkshire

West Yorkshire's five metropolitan councils (Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield) and South Yorkshire's four (Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley) each run their own adult social care. Since 2023, most of North Yorkshire has been covered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council, with the City of York Council separate. In the east, it is Hull City Council or East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Every council offers a free needs assessment and may contribute to care depending on savings.

Yorkshire's hospitals

The region's main hospitals include Leeds General Infirmary and St James's, the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield, Bradford Royal Infirmary, Airedale, Pinderfields in Wakefield, Calderdale Royal, Huddersfield Royal, Doncaster Royal, York Hospital, Harrogate District, Scarborough and Hull Royal Infirmary. For patients from the Dales or the coast, the journey home can be long. A live-in carer arranged in advance means your relative returns to support from the first night.

The Dales, the Moors and the coast

In Wensleydale, Swaledale, Nidderdale, the Moors and along the coast from Whitby to Bridlington, many older people live in villages with few buses and fewer care workers. Winter can cut some places off for days. Live-in care keeps support going whatever the weather, and a carer who drives can make appointments, shopping and visits to friends possible. For couples who have farmed or lived in the same village for decades, it means they can stay together at home.

In the cities, the pressure is different: busy families, long working days and parents who have lived on the same street all their lives. A live-in carer gives them company and practical help, and gives the family peace of mind.

Live-in or visiting care in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford?

In the cities, families often start with visiting care: a carer calls in for half an hour or so at set times. That works while needs are light, but it leaves long gaps, and it cannot help if your relative falls at night or becomes anxious in the evening. Once support is needed through the day, or someone should not be alone overnight, a live-in carer is often simpler and better value than adding more visits. It also means one familiar face, rather than several different carers each week.

Live-in care can also be short term, for example for a few weeks after a hip or knee replacement, and then ended as your relative recovers.

How much is live-in care in Yorkshire?

Live-in care starts from £1,200 a week for one person, with specialist care for more complex needs from £1,300 and two carers for round-the-clock waking support from £2,600. It is the same price in Sheffield as in Swaledale. See our pricing, and read about dementia care and respite care at home.

Funding & regulation

Paying for care in England

Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.

Read our full funding guide →

Who regulates care here

Home care in England is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.

Where funding comes from

Apply through your local authority's adult social care team. Means-tested local authority funding and NHS Continuing Healthcare are both available depending on assessed need.

How we fit in

Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.

Common questions

Live-in care in Yorkshire

Local answers on timing, regulation and funding.

Not seeing your question?

Our care managers answer these every day. A no-obligation call takes about ten minutes.

0800 368 8558Lines open 8am–10pm, seven days a week See all questions
Do you cover the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors?

Yes. Because the carer lives in rather than travelling between visits, remote villages in the Dales, the Moors and the Wolds are covered at the same price as Leeds or Sheffield. We can match a carer who drives where public transport is limited.

Which council do I contact for care in North Yorkshire?

Since April 2023, North Yorkshire Council has run adult social care for the whole county outside York, replacing the county council and the seven district councils. The City of York Council handles care for addresses in York itself.

How much does live-in care cost in Leeds or Sheffield?

From £1,200 a week for standard live-in care, £1,300 for specialist care and £2,600 for two carers providing round-the-clock support. The price is the same across Yorkshire and one carer can support a couple for a single weekly fee.

Can a live-in carer help after a stay at LGI or the Northern General?

Yes. Tell us the hospital and the expected discharge date. Most placements start within a week, and urgent cases can often be covered within 24 to 48 hours, which can help your relative leave hospital as soon as they are medically ready.

Is live-in care in Yorkshire suitable for dementia?

For many people it is the best option, because they stay in familiar surroundings with one consistent carer who learns their routines. We match carers with dementia experience, and specialist live-in care for more complex needs starts from £1,300 a week.

Are you a Yorkshire care agency?

We are a national introductory agency covering the whole of Yorkshire. We check and match self-employed live-in carers, you choose the carer, and we stay involved for support, cover during breaks and a replacement if a carer is not the right fit.

How many care homes are there in Yorkshire?

Our care-home directory lists 1,479 registered care homes in Yorkshire, each with its own page, and 1,061 of them are rated Good or Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Together they have around 46,600 beds. Live-in care is the alternative for anyone who would rather stay in their own home: one carer moves in, and couples can stay together.
