Live-in care from the Beacons to Montgomeryshire
Powys is the largest county in Wales and the most thinly populated, covering the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), the Cambrian Mountains and the Welsh borders. Families searching for home care in Powys are supporting parents in Brecon, Crickhowell, Hay-on-Wye and Ystradgynlais in the south, in Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader, Knighton and Presteigne in Radnorshire, and in Newtown, Welshpool, Llanidloes and Machynlleth in Montgomeryshire. On the hill farms and in the valleys, visiting care can be almost impossible to arrange. A live-in carer lives with your relative instead.
We have local pages for towns across the county, including Brecon, Welshpool, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire.

Community hospitals, and the journey beyond
Powys has no district general hospital of its own. Powys Teaching Health Board runs community hospitals in towns such as Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, Welshpool and Machynlleth, while emergencies go over the border to Shrewsbury or Hereford, or to Aberystwyth, Merthyr Tydfil, Abergavenny or Wrexham. A live-in carer in Powys can be ready for discharge, however long the drive home.
Powys County Council and Welsh charging
Adult social care is provided by Powys County Council, which carries out free needs assessments and carer's assessments. In Wales there is a weekly limit on what councils can charge for care and support at home, worth checking once your relative is assessed. Care services are regulated by Care Inspectorate Wales.
Sheep, chapels and the Royal Welsh
Many older people in Powys have farmed the same hill land all their lives, and the Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, the livestock marts and the chapel are the calendar of the year. A care home can mean moving far from family. If your relative prefers Welsh, tell us when we match. Couples can stay together with one carer supporting both. You choose your carer from matched profiles before anything is agreed.

Funding & regulation
Paying for care in Wales
Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.
Read our full funding guide →Who regulates care here
Home care in Wales is regulated by the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.
Where funding comes from
Apply through your local authority's social services department. Funding is means-tested by the local authority, with the Welsh Government setting a capital limit above which people fund their own care. What a council can charge for the care at home it arranges is capped at £100 a week (2026/27); privately arranged live-in care is paid separately.
How we fit in
Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.
Our carers
The people who would be caring for your family
Our carers are spread across the UK, supported by regional care managers. Every one is interviewed in person, enhanced DBS checked and reference-checked before they are ever introduced to a family — and you choose who moves in.
- Interviewed face to face, never hired on paperwork alone
- Enhanced DBS checked, with references verified
- You meet and approve your carer before they start

Often, yes. Your local council's adult social care team can carry out a free needs assessment and, depending on savings, may contribute to the cost. Where needs are mainly health-related, NHS Continuing Healthcare can pay in full. Attendance Allowance, paid to people over State Pension age who need help with personal care, is not means-tested and can be put towards care.
