Live-in care from Largs to Girvan
Ayrshire runs down the Firth of Clyde from Largs to Girvan, with seaside towns along the coast, the former mining towns of the Doon and Irvine valleys inland, and the Isle of Arran across the water. Families searching for home care in Ayrshire are supporting parents in Largs, Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Irvine in the north, in Kilmarnock, Stewarton, Cumnock and the East Ayrshire villages, and in Troon, Prestwick, Ayr, Maybole and Girvan in the south. Out in the rural villages, visiting care can be sparse. A live-in carer lives with your relative instead.
We also arrange care in Ayr, Kilmarnock, Irvine, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and Glasgow.

Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr
NHS Ayrshire and Arran runs two acute hospitals: University Hospital Crosshouse near Kilmarnock, for the north and east, and University Hospital Ayr, for the south, with community hospitals in several towns. A live-in carer in Ayrshire can be ready for discharge from either, so your relative is not left waiting in hospital for a package of visits.
Three councils, three partnerships
In Scotland, personal care is free for adults assessed as needing it, whatever their income. Ayrshire has three councils, North, East and South Ayrshire, and assessments are carried out through each area's Health and Social Care Partnership with NHS Ayrshire and Arran. Care services are regulated by the Care Inspectorate. We can explain how free personal care payments can sit alongside private live-in care.
Burns, the coast and the pits
Many older people in Ayrshire worked in the pits of the Doon valley, the carpet and whisky works of Kilmarnock or the seaside trade, and Robert Burns is part of everyone's story. The promenades at Largs, Troon and Ayr, an ice cream at Largs and a day trip to Arran are favourite outings. Couples can stay together with one carer supporting both. You choose your carer from matched profiles before anything is agreed.

Funding & regulation
Paying for care in Scotland
Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.
Read our full funding guide →Who regulates care here
Home care in Scotland is regulated by the Care Inspectorate. They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.
Where funding comes from
Apply through your local council's social work department. Scotland provides free personal and nursing care to those who are assessed as needing it, regardless of income — a different system from means-tested funding in England.
How we fit in
Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.
Our carers
The people who would be caring for your family
Our carers are spread across the UK, supported by regional care managers. Every one is interviewed in person, enhanced DBS checked and reference-checked before they are ever introduced to a family — and you choose who moves in.
- Interviewed face to face, never hired on paperwork alone
- Enhanced DBS checked, with references verified
- You meet and approve your carer before they start
