Live-in care across Tyne and Wear
Tyne and Wear is made up of five areas, each with its own council: Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Families searching for home care in Tyne and Wear are often supporting parents in places such as Jesmond and Gosforth, Whickham and Low Fell, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Wallsend, South Shields and Jarrow, or Sunderland and Washington. Live-in care works the same in all of them: one carer moves into the home and provides support through the day and night.
We have local pages for Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, North Shields, Whitley Bay, Wallsend, Jarrow and Washington.

Hospitals across the area
Hospital care is provided by several trusts: the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle; the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead; North Tyneside General Hospital and the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at Cramlington for many North Tyneside residents; and Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital to the south. Wherever your relative is treated, a live-in carer in Tyne and Wear can be ready for discharge day.
Five councils, one process
Each of the five councils runs its own adult social care service and offers a free needs assessment, and carer's assessments for family members. Depending on savings, the council may contribute to the cost of care. NHS Continuing Healthcare is assessed separately where needs are mainly health-related, and Attendance Allowance is available regardless of income to people over State Pension age.
Close-knit communities
Many older people on Tyneside and Wearside have lived in the same street for most of their lives. Live-in care keeps them there, near family and neighbours, with a carer who helps them get out and about rather than a move to somewhere unfamiliar.
The area's shipbuilding and mining past means many older residents, particularly men, live with long-term lung conditions such as COPD. If that applies to your relative, we match carers experienced with breathlessness, inhalers and home oxygen.

If a move into one of these homes is on the table, it is worth comparing it with live-in care: one carer living in your relative’s own home in Tyne and Wear, looking after only them. See what live-in care costs, or ask us to check carer availability in Tyne and Wear.

Funding & regulation
Paying for care in England
Home care is regulated and funded differently in each nation, so the route is not the same everywhere. Here is how it works where you live.
Read our full funding guide →Who regulates care here
Home care in England is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). They inspect and register home care services to make sure standards are met.
Where funding comes from
Apply through your local authority's adult social care team. Means-tested local authority funding and NHS Continuing Healthcare are both available depending on assessed need.
How we fit in
Live-in Care Direct is an introductory agency. We introduce self-employed carers to families rather than employing them, so you contract directly with your carer and keep the choice of who provides your care.
Our carers
The people who would be caring for your family
Our carers are spread across the UK, supported by regional care managers. Every one is interviewed in person, enhanced DBS checked and reference-checked before they are ever introduced to a family — and you choose who moves in.
- Interviewed face to face, never hired on paperwork alone
- Enhanced DBS checked, with references verified
- You meet and approve your carer before they start

Often, yes. Your local council's adult social care team can carry out a free needs assessment and, depending on savings, may contribute to the cost. Attendance Allowance, paid to people over State Pension age who need help with personal care, is not means-tested and can be put towards care.
